A Note to My Patients Concerning BIA-ALCL..
The recent news regarding certain types of breast implants and their potential association with cancer is alarming, but unfortunately not surprising or as recent as one would think.
As far back as 2010, I remember hearing rumors of certain breast implants being associated with lymphoma. While I do not routinely practice medicine based on “rumors,” I believed the potential health risks to my patients required an over-abundance of caution. Therefore, despite pressure to do so, I have refused to use these implants.
Accordingly, I have NEVER implanted any of the implants currently being potentially associated with Breast Implant Associated Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (BIA-ALCL).
I am proud of my decision.
I can honestly say to any of my patients that they are NOT at risk of BIA-ALCL due to these specific implants.
While there are always risks to any surgery, and while breast augmentation carries with it a specific set of risks, my patients can rest assured that the risk of lymphoma associated with these specific implants does not apply to them.
Over the years, I have treated several patients from other surgeons who have requested their implants to be replaced or removed. Now so, more than ever, I am committed to helping these patients in whatever capacity I can offer.
